The must-sees of a campervan trip to Italy
The Dolomites:
Before the Dolomites, we thought no mountain range could rival those in France (patriotic bias, obviously). And then… we met the Dolomites. In summer or winter, the region is breathtaking and offers plenty of places to stop for the night. Just make sure you enjoy hiking!Tuscany:
If you’re the kind of traveller who loves cultural stops and exploring villages, welcome to paradise. Tuscany is meant to be enjoyed slowly, freely, in rhythm with terrace espressos and sunset antipasti, overlooking superb rolling hills.Southern Italy:
Naples, Puglia, Sicily… It takes a bit more time and planning to explore the South, but the Amalfi Coast, the picturesque villages and the spectacular beaches are more than worth the effort!Gastronomy:
You eat (very) well here, and for a reasonable price. Outside big cities, it’s easy to avoid tourist traps. Pinsa, pizza, pasta, gelateria… devour anything that ends in “-a” with your eyes closed. The Lake Region:
Lake Como, Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore… come on Italy, leave a few for the rest of us, will you? These natural wonders are easy to access — less than three hours from the French border.Campervan road trip in Italy: the best travel itinerarie
Hiring a campervan in Italy means enjoying rich, varied itineraries.
In the north: mountains. In the south: beaches. In between: rolling plains, unique historical relics, active volcanoes, colourful villages and enchanting lakes. If you’re unsure where to start, here are a few ideas:
Campervan road trip in Northern Italy: one-week itinerary
The lakes of Northern Italy
Travel along the water through the lake region, passing via Milan. Lake Como for chic elegance, Lake Garda for immensity, Lake Maggiore for a mix of both. You’ll easily find authorised places to park, guaranteeing breakfast with views over Alpine peaks, steep villages and shimmering shores.
The Cinque Terre by campervan
If you prefer salty water to freshwater, head to Liguria, along the Italian Riviera. Between Portofino and the Cinque Terre, take your fill of colourful villages and postcard landscapes. Park your hired campervan outside the centres and explore on foot to soak up the local charm.
Be warned: in high season, it’s crowded. Another drawback: you can’t drive a campervan through the narrow streets of Manarola, Riomaggiore, Vernazza… Leave Giuseppe—your campervan renamed for the occasion—on your parking spot and explore the region by bike or by hiring a scooter.

Campervan road trip in the Dolomites
Hard to decide what we love most about the Dolomites… The sharp ridgelines? The abundance of wildlife and flora? The cosy evenings spent under the duvet watching the stars?
One thing’s certain: you won’t be alone. For a campervan trip in the Dolomites, go in low season to avoid frustration.
- The most beautiful landscapes in the Dolomites:
- Lago di Carezza
- The Sella needles
- Cinema delle Odde
- Gardena Pass
- Lago di Braies
- Tre Cime di Lavaredo
- Cinque Torri
- Seceda
- Passo Giau
- Lago di Sorapis
In winter, the Dolomites become a paradise for skiers, around Cortina or Val Gardena. Beware: queues can feel like purgatory. If you miss peace and quiet, head to Arabba or San Martino di Castrozza.

Campervan road trip in Tuscany: one-week itinerary
From southern France, Tuscany is just over four hours away by road. As mentioned earlier, most of your time will be spent wandering through cities and villages, punctuated by breaks among rolling hills.
After exploring Florence, Pisa and Siena, take to the road with your campervan hire in Italy and let the Tuscan hills guide you. Relax in the hot springs of Bagni di San Filippo or Saturnia. Film lovers will enjoy the wheat fields, flowers, cypress-lined lanes and traditional houses stretching towards the Crete Senesi. Now you are free.
Campervan road trip in Southern Italy: two-week itinerary
Reaching Naples from France is already an adventure in itself. In ten hours from Nice, discover Genoa, Pisa, Florence and Rome. And why stop there?
From Naples, you choose. Explore Pompeii and hike around Vesuvius. Head to Sicily, accessible via ferry from Reggio Calabria. Or drive east towards Puglia for its authentic charm.
Hiring a campervan to discover Southern Italy means enjoying a tailor-made journey through picturesque villages, turquoise beaches and local traditions. Campervan hire in Italy becomes the best way to combine culture, nature and coastline with total freedom.

La Dolce Vita, from spring to autumn
Slow travel and dolce vita were meant for each other. Aboard your campervan hire in Italy, have fun collecting clichés:
A cappuccino and a cornetto in the shade of a Tuscan cypress.
Animated conversations between old men playing cards in small village piazzas.
A Fiat 500 parked beneath a bougainvillea.
White sheets fluttering in the wind on balconies everywhere.
Hiring a campervan for a holiday in Italy also means indulging in countless food stops: dripping gelato, from breakfast to midnight snacks…
We could go on for hours, but the best is to live it.
Frequently asked questions
All our answers to help you make the right choice when renting a campervan.
Is wild camping allowed in Italy?
No. Scusi, but Italian regulations are strict. Wild camping can lead to fines of several hundred euros. However, agritourism in Italy is very well developed. By purchasing a membership card (around forty euros) on agricamper.com, you’ll find many authentic and comfortable places to spend the night. In addition, Park4Night remains an excellent tool to locate the best spots to park your hired campervan in Italy.
What are the driving rules in Italy?
At first sight, you might think there aren’t any. Italians love speed… and it shows. That said, there are speed cameras (more or less functional) everywhere, which tempers the enthusiasm of budding Schumachers. Overall, the highway code is identical to the French one. Before hiring a campervan in Italy, make sure you respect road signs and restricted zones (especially ZTL areas in historic centres).
Where can you park in Italy?
Honestly, leaving Italy without a parking fine is almost a miracle. In cities, it’s a real headache. Be careful with ZTLs — restricted traffic zones with time schedules that are not always clearly indicated. They apply in most historic centres. Otherwise, follow the colour codes. White lines = free parking. Blue = paid. Yellow = reserved for specific vehicles. Pink = for pregnant women or adults with young children.
What budget should you plan for a road trip in Italy?
Besides the price of your campervan hire with WeVan, expect between 30 and 50 euros per day per person. This covers fuel, tolls, traditional restaurants, groceries, entrance tickets to monuments and attractions, and camping pitches.
Hotels are fairly expensive in Italy. A campervan road trip remains a very economical option, as your campervan combines the comfort of a hotel with the mobility of a hire car.
