The must-sees when hiring a campervan for Norway

The Lofoten Islands:

Although the growing popularity of the Lofoten Islands has made the area a little less open to wild camping, it remains an unmissable stop on any campervan itinerary in Norway. Explore the southern islands: red hytter, air-drying herring, mountains rising straight out of the sea… it’s all there!

The western fjords:

North of Bergen, the three fjords — Geiranger, Sognefjord and Nærøyfjord — are legendary. You’ll need several days just to convince yourself that what you’re seeing is real. A must-see for any campervan trip in Norway.

The Atlantic Road:

This stretch of road is short — barely ten kilometres — but what a treat! Bridges leap over the ocean and rocky islets, eagles soar overhead, porpoises play offshore… and you, you just sit there taking it all in.

Why hire a campervan in Norway?

Reconnect with Nature

Friluftsliv. No, a cat hasn’t walked across the keyboard. It’s a lifestyle concept you’re about to fall in love with. Three centuries later, this philosophy still inspires Norwegians in their quest to disconnect from routine and daily stress. There are even school programmes devoted entirely to friluftsliv.

Thankfully, Norwegians never have to look far to get a breath of fresh air. From the major cities, there’s always a discreet gateway leading into the vast outdoors.
Travelling Norway by campervan means embracing total freedom between majestic fjords, panoramic roads and Arctic beaches. One morning, you wake up beside a fjord worthy of Ragnar Lothbrok. By evening, you’re sharing a waffle (a local essential!) on a lunar plain in the company of curious reindeer. Your campervan road trip in Norway is about to be legendary: drive roads that flirt with the clouds, slip through tunnels carved into the mountains, wander forests wrapped in mist, or park on white-sand beaches under a blazing sunset.

Discover the outdoor culture

Long live the allemannsretten, Norway’s right of access to nature. Norwegians take this very, very seriously. Beyond being allowed to pitch a tent in a national park, you’re also allowed to park on private land… Honestly, you can’t dream of better conditions to prepare your campervan itinerary in Norway.
The bonus? You drive, fall in love with an area, stop, and stay for a day or several. It’s exactly how vanlife is meant to be lived.
Better yet, the infrastructure is exceptional: impeccable roads, clean and well-equipped rest areas… Life outdoors is genuinely easy. Fishing is permitted without a licence, campfires are allowed (using dead wood only) and foraging is authorised for the right species.

Do sport in jaw-dropping places

Imagine having such wild landscapes and not being able to enjoy them? Thanks to its incredible diversity, Norway suits gentle outings as well as epic challenges. No wonder Kilian Jornet lives here. Before leaving for Norway, pack a kayak or your trail-running gear into your hire campervan – you’ll definitely use it.
Some of our favourite outdoor spots:

  • Hiking: Besseggen ridge, Galdhøpiggen, Skomakarnibbå, Trolltunga, Kinsarvik
  • Climbing: Trollveggen, the ice falls of Rjukan, Store Skagastølstind…
  • Kayak: Arendal, the western fjords, the Helgeland coast, the Lofoten Islands, the Vesterålen…
  • MTB: Kristiansand, Hovden, Hafjell…

Lose your bearings, from Midsommar to the Northern Lights

Even the sun and stars bend the rules here. With your campervan hire for Norway, step outside the normal flow of time. Around the summer solstice, daylight stretches for hours. The further north you drive, the longer the sun reigns over the night. Everything becomes possible: hiking when the world sleeps, setting out on a sea-kayak adventure at 2 a.m.… Tourism operators extend their opening hours, too.

In winter, the opposite happens. The sun disappears around 3 p.m. Depressing? Not quite. Near the Arctic Circle, one of the world’s most spectacular shows begins. Park your campervan and spend the night beneath the Northern Lights. Hard to beat that for emotion.

Where to see the Northern Lights in Norway?

  • Narvik
  • Tromsø
  • Lofoten Islands
  • Vesterålen
  • Alta
  • Bodø

With a campervan hire including unlimited mileage, you can leave France with peace of mind, ready to explore Norway’s wonders without constraints. No need to calculate distances or design a rigid itinerary: simply follow your instincts, from the south to the very edge of the Arctic Circle. Total freedom — that’s the WeVan experience: a campervan journey built to take you as far as your dreams.

Frequently asked questions

All our answers to help you make the right choice when renting a campervan.

Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed in Norway?

Yes, Norway largely allows wild camping, including with a campervan. Under the principle of Allemannsretten (the right to access nature), you can stay almost anywhere as long as you:

  • Keep a minimum distance of 150 metres from houses

  • Avoid parking in restricted-access areas created to protect biodiversity

  • Take all your rubbish with you and leave no trace

Otherwise, regulations even allow you to park your campervan on private land without needing explicit permission. But please, ask anyway — let’s try to polish France’s reputation abroad.

What itinerary should you follow to reach Norway by campervan from France?

The easiest solution is to hire a campervan from our WeVan agency in Lille, then drive to Hirtshals, at the northern tip of Denmark.
The crossing takes around 3 hours to reach Kristiansand, in southern Norway. Prices range from €300 to €600 for two people depending on selected options. Other routes exist to Stavanger or Bergen. To avoid any stress, opt for campervan hire with unlimited mileage.

What equipment do you need for a campervan road trip in Norway?

In summer: pack mosquito repellent, good hiking shoes, sunscreen, swimsuits, a hammock and your favourite outdoor gear (canoe, paddleboard, surfboard…).

In winter: temperatures can drop below –20 °C and even –40 °C within the Arctic Circle. Don’t cut corners: bring proper sleeping bags, thermal clothing, fully waterproof shoes, snowshoes, emergency blankets and excellent head torches.

Can I hire a campervan in winter in Norway?

In winter, it’s best to hire a motorhome with indoor toilet and hot shower.
Our campervans for Norway are equipped with stationary heating and snow tyres — essential for travelling safely on Norwegian roads.
Be aware that you must be confident driving in unpredictable or even severe weather conditions.
